    My French Girls

Here’s an update on my French Blanc de Hotots, that I received from Nova Scotia, first generation descended from La Maison de Laperriere’s French imports. They are larger than American Hotots, are more energetic, and have a longer, leaner build. They dance and leap about their hutch with grace and ease, they have more of a large running breeds moves compared to my stockier German line Hotots.

At less than 6 months old, Altesse de la Maison de Laperriere is 10.4 lbs

At just over 6 months old, Amerique de la Maison de Laperriere is 9.5 lbs

Only letting her go in favor of keeping her two older sisters, to make room for their future litters. She’s a very large girl. She has 3 Grand Champion older siblings. She’s got nice fur, even mellow temperament. Sire Calloway, Dam Barbi Brown and 1/2 Calloway. $65

Blue Lionhead Buck Vienna Marked about 3 1/2 months old, 3 lbs
He will be for sale at the Stockton show Feb 1. He is darling. Blue eyes. Gorgeous double maned. Pedigreed. Blueberry is super soft and has been an indoor bunny so he is used to attention. I hate to let him go, he’s special. Good home only please hopefully to be someone’s beloved pet. He’d also pair well with a Blue Eyed White doe, as his mom is BEW. I will be choosey about his home. $50

How Hotots are posed in Switzerland

How Hotots are posed in Switzerland

Hotots are an arched breed, but unfortunately were classified as commercial type in the U.S. so are posed on the show table into the commercial rabbit loaf-pose. The truth is this gorgeous breed is both a meaty commercial build rabbit, and an arched breed, and while chunky compared to other arched breeds, I feel shows off the very fine lines of the rabbit in this more natural position. I am in favor of introducing this second, classic pose (the pose used in Europe, where the breed originates). Even chunky bunnies can strut their stuff juuuust fine.

    Braveheart

    Braveheart

Baby Blanc d’Hotot Braveheart – our house bunny! He’s the most snuggly rabbit I’ve ever met. We’ll see if he keeps that trait into his adulthood, but right now he’s just my darling. Has two siblings, Sultan x Shaherazod.

Belgian Hare – Jack the Rabbit

Belgian Hare - Jack the Rabbit

The guy who started it all… my first (and still, only) Belgian Hare. He’s a wonderful creature, smart, agile, funny. I love this little guy. We used to let him roam our whole 2-acre property, he considered it his job to run up to greet visitors. After he caught a respiratory illness from the wild rabbits,we had to revoke his priviledges… now he mostly keeps to his 8′ x 4′ run with only occasional supervised release time. I am still waiting for a genetically unrelated Black & Tan Belgian doe.

    Colony Cage

    Colony Cage

Here’s another look at the Harlequin colony cage. Pip and her litter are on one half of the 10 ft cage. As the litter grows I will section the boys off, keeping them together in a family unit, while also introducing the young Hotot doe to see if they’ll get along. She’s currently on the other half of the cage but quarantined in a smaller section.  There is a door in the middle, see previous post.

    Colony Living – Cage Style

    Colony Living - Cage Style

Pip shows off her new cage. Its 10 feet long, with a divider in the middle. The divider has a door in it, the spring latch is visible just above her forehead. This way I can introduce another young female on the other side (an Hotot, Bowie, is over there) and see if the two of them will get a long, before opening the door. Does typically scuffle for dominance for a couple days, and once they sort it out are best of friends. There are always exceptions however, for instance, Bijoux does not like other rabbits in her cage and will get grumpy towards her own offspring. I find its best to grow the colony herd with their own offspring – there is a family bond that remains with most.
This custom designed cage also has two subdividers latched to the ceiling, in case in needs to be converted to compartments. Its 30″ high to provide ample stretch space – bunnies love to stand on their hind legs and look around. I provide playboxes for the bunnies to jump on, this exercises their muscles and keeps them busy.
